AP Calculus BC !

I took the AP Calculus BC exam last Tuesday and it was awesome!

I had studied for it for about 4 months before and It was quite fun to take it. I know that I could never have taken it without my Heavenly Father's help.
The free response questions ( released on college board here ) were harder than the past few FRQs that I have taken ( like the 2013, 2012, and 2016 ones).

For example the first calculator one ( or #1) did not ask for a estimation of a derivative ( as the earlier ones usually do) and asked for the rate of change of a volume that required an integral, which I had pondered about earlier while I was taking the course. Because I had learned about related rates for objects and shapes that had well defined formulas for area , volume and length ( circles, right triangles, cubes and the like), and I started learning how to take volumes of irregular shapes using integrals ( like volumes of rotation using discs and washers, and volumes with cross sections that had known areas ). So I wondered, If you knew the rate at with the upper bound of integration was increasing , could you solve for the rate at which the volume was changing ? I was not able to figure it out right then, and I still wondered it as a kept learning calculus.

But later on ( like 1-2 weeks before the exam ) it came to me! All I had to do was solve a basic differential equation, sub the solved value for the upper bound of integration as a function of time into the integral, and then use the chain rule and fundamental theorem to solve it !
It was a wonderful blessing from my Father in Heaven to allow me to figure this out, and have it on the exam!

The second FRQ was crazy!! it was a BC topic only that involved two polar functions and their graphs and had some really interesting parts. Part a was basic as it had you take the area of one of the polar graphs in the first quadrant, which since a calculator was allowed was not to complicated after you set up the integral.

Part b was cool because it asked you to write an equation that had a ray k that separated one of the graphs into two equal areas in the first quadrant. But parts c and d were where it got me really thinking !

Part c had two functions whose x and y coordinates were determined by functions ( which was basically a parametric form).The x coordinate of the first was determined by the a function of theta that equaled one of the polar functions, while the other was determined as a function of theta that equaled the other polar one. Both of the y coordinated were determined as theta. The question asked me to find an function in terms of theta that was the distance between the two graphs at any theta. The way I went about this problem was to use the vector formula for distance ( sqrt(x^2+y^2) ) and then minus the one with greater x coordinate from the one with lesser x coordinate.

Then the question asked for the average value ( over an interval ) for the function I had written , which made my have to plug in a whole bunch of notation into my calculator and then use it to integrate.  The last part of the question was where I had to take a derivative at a point of the function and determine if the function was increasing or decreasing. I remember urging my calculator on when it was taking to long to integrate the function

There were some hard parts on the exam that I did not really know how to do, but overall the exam was good. I had time left during Section I after finishing so I wrote James 1:5-6 from memory and my testimony.

The AP Calculus BC exam ( and AB ) was (were ) changed this school year to include a few more topics and with a different format. This exam I think made students think more and use multiple things they learned to answer questions.

Calculus was fun and I hope to get a 5 on the exam with Heavenly Father's help.

It is pretty hard to wait for my scores until July 5th but I can't do much about it.

Calculus was awesome and fun to do ( once I learned the rules ) but it also has some practical and useful applications, since it allows you to find areas and slopes of things not defined in regular algebra and geometry. Graphs of thins like membership versus time , or profit versus time usually are not straight lines and perfect circles, and calculus enables you to find the instantaneous rate at with your membership ( or profit) is growing.  With differential equations you can also find the population at some time in the future if given a solvable differential equation for the rate of growth of the population, and an initial t=0 population.

Europe Adventure

We recently got back from an Adventure in Europe. We first packed, then we drove to a bus station. At the bus station we parked and got on the bus to Boston. We got off at the airport and discovered someone had taken our bag. We went to terminal E and took a Aer Lingus flight to Dublin that lasted about 5 hrs & 20 minutes. We did not have that one bag, but the bus company was searching for it. In Dublin we took a taxi to a fishing village , saw a castle there and ate at a cafe. We had about 4 hr layover so then we took another taxi back to Dublin airport. The currency in Ireland was Euro's but they drove on the left side of the road. So they had a bit of English culture left from the time Britain ruled Ireland. The taxi drivers did not really like England and one played a Irish rebel song when we asked him his favorite Irish music. We took another Aer Lingus flight from terminal 2 to Inverness Scotland. That flight was only an hour and a half. In Inverness we got a Mercedes rental car that turned off when you stopped ! We drove towards Skye after we got some food from a market. There were sheep and green hills everywhere!


 We stopped on our way and hiked up a hill and had a picnic on it. There were many small rivulets running through the hills too. We saw plenty of sheep on our way to Skye. We stopped at some castles like Eileen Donan and Urqhart






.  We also went to a town called Strontian, where strontium was discovered. In Skye we slept in a cottage, and explored many places, including Portree ( the capital ), and the fairy springs                  




next to the Cullens ( a mountain range ). Then we went down to Stirling, and saw Stirling Castle. After this we went down to Edinburgh and the surrounding towns. We saw Edinburgh Castle






and went to church in DalKeith. We also went through a flower field ( around North Berwick )

We hiked up a The North Berwick Law ( or just the Berwick Law ), in North Berwick , it is a hill that has a whale's Jawbone ( now a replica , added in 2008, after one rotted away , and was removed in 2005 )  on the top. It also has ruins of an Iron age hill fort and military bases of many wars, including the Napoleonic and WWII. I got lost on it but, We found each other later. After this we had a Flight booked for London, but when we stopped on our way to the Airport , Our Sister's lip got slashed on the concrete. We went to the airport , and they told us that we should get it stitched, ( by the way the medical agent there was not very helpful ) But they couldn't do it, and there was a hospital 7 miles away or so. So we went to St Johns hospital and waited forever in the emergency room. Then after some more waiting in a patient's room, there came a facial surgeon and he stitched our sisters lip up. We had missed our flight from Edinburgh airport, and drove around, after getting some food at Tesco's, to find a hotel to sleep for the night. We went to hotel one hotel, they said no, then another ( that they recommended to us ), that said no , and another ( that they recommended to us ) , that said NO. But , finally we found one that said yes! and we slept there during the night. There was a deal if you book flights the day before them , before midnight, then they are cheaper. Our dad booked our flight to London , like 2 minutes before Midnight. We slept there that night, and then had a Breakfast there , for they had breakfast served there. That day we flew to London, we had lost some time, so we did not go to Oxford. But we took a bus tour of London, and saw Big Ben's tower              



, Parliament , and other buildings. We then flew to Bergerac, France, and then drove to Beynac.











There we slept in an old ( about medieval ) stone cottage of the hill that had the castle. The Cottage was refurbished on the inside for modern needs. We explored much of the Dordogne







, and some of the castles around it, I got my Sword in one of the Castles.





After this we drove to Paris in a rental car we had gotten in Bergerac airport. We lost a wallet at one of the tolls, but finally, after some 6 hours, we made it to Paris. In Paris we explored



, and saw Notre Dame



 ( there was a statue of Charlemagne near it, and many pigeons  ) , The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower



( I touched the base of this one ). From here we flew to Dublin, and after a 2 hour layover ( that was delayed some more ), we flew to Boston. It was great to be home, and we had a great time in Europe.

Winter Olympics

The 2014 Sochi winter Olympics are almost over. There are many ways of counting the medals and see who is winning. Here are some ways:



count who has the mot medals-United States of America 1st . Russia 2nd . Netherlands-Canada tied 3rd

Count who has the most golds ( other medals tie breakers)- Norway 1st. United States of America 2nd . Germany 3rd. 



 If you count gold 3 silver 2 and bronze 1- United States of America 1st . Russia 2nd . Norwa 3rd





 This is of today and right now.
 There are many sports in the winter Olympics here they are:
Bobsleigh this is sledding in a sleigh called a bobsleigh. Alpine skiing this is skiing down various hills and slopes. Ice hockey this is like soccer skating rugby and golf you try to put a puck in your opponents net. Luge this is sledding on your back . Biathlon this is skiing and shooting a gun. cross-country skiing this is skiing. Nordic combined this is ski jumping and cross country skiing combined. Skeleton this is sledding on your belly .Short track speed skating is like sprint speed skating.speed skating is a race between countries on skates . Ski jumping is when you go down a hill on skies and then jump. Snowboarding this is when you snow board on a board on various hills and slopes. Freestyle skiing this is when you ski and do crazy tricks. Curling this is a sport where you push a stone and then others sweep around it . Figure skating is when you dance on ice. Those are the sports of the
2014 Sochi winter Olympics.
The winner of everything except the most bronze is Russia. U.S.A. 2nd on most medals.

my birthday and the hobbit.

We had a birthday party for
 me recently. We went to see
 the hobbit part 2. I got a
sketch pad , A states game
 , money and Othello. We had
 a sleep over with a friend.
 The hobbit part 2 was good
 . My favorite characters were
 Olin and Fili .

My inventions today

Today I made a foosball game with a shoe box , playmobiles, pencils , paintbrushes , scissors and tape . It was pretty hard to make but I did it . I also made a pulley elevator out of salt boxes , a lamp and some string . It works by putting a weight in one box that makes the other box go up !
